Human-centred AI design

Challenge

AI systems are relatively new territory for design teams. When designing AI solutions, it's not immediately obvious what human-centred principles to apply, or how to ensure responsible implementation.

Solution

Collaborating with researchers at Siili, I visualised the key principles formed when designing digital services and products with AI – clear, actionable principles that designers can quickly consult when working through project requirements. The principles advocate transparent collaboration between human and AI, leading to empathetic and empowering experiences for all people.

Impact

Provided practical guidance via visualised principles, that are easy to remember and an agent designer can check and ask ethical guidance during rapid project pacing, making ethical AI design accessible rather than theoretical.

Background

This concept, evolved through internal work at Siili

Diversity

Design for wholeness rather than just ethical compliance / consider improvement not as linear progress but as adaptation to changing contexts / find the "new within" existing systems and constraints / design environments that encourage multiple perspectives and repeated consideration / capacity to tell the story of decisions / Perhaps true transparency is designing spaces where understanding naturally emerges rather than explicitly showing everything / consider sustainability as a generative collateral / diversity strengthens systems like alloys strengthen metals.
